What are the best vitamins and herbal supplements for building muscles and physical strength?
Posted by admin on Mar 24, 2010
I know these days with the busiest of schedules it is very difficult to work up to anything greater than a meager muscle. With that said not taking vitamins and herbs can be considered a fight against the workout. With the helping hand of vitamins and herbs what are the best to take for building muscles and physical strength?
Also, please don’t say that Mormons aren’t allowed to build muscles because I always get that and it seems that there is a precedent for everything in Mormon doctrine. I therefore ask this question as a human being and not from a Mormon perspective.
Taking care of your body through the proper exercise, a well-balanced diet and a stress-free mind all contribute greatly towards keeping healthy and building a good set of muscles.
Vitamins –
Additional supplementation may be necessary to reach optimal levels of antioxidants, including vitamins A, C (ascorbic acid), and E.
Aim for 1,000 mg of C, 200 to 400 mg of E, and 10,000 IU of A (best in the form of beta-carotene).
Bodybuilding requires the most protein, sometimes as much as 300 g per day, which is difficult to manage through meals alone.
(The body can only absorb about 35 g at one meal.) So bodybuilders and athletes who need to rebuild muscles after intensive training often turn to protein supplements, especially whey protein. Virtually fat-free, whey protein provides immune system support as well as essential muscle-building amino acids.
Improved performance means more energy and endurance, and that translates into a diet that provides complex carbohydrates w brown rice, whole wheat, oatmeal, unrefined flours, and fruits and vegetables. Carbohydrate supplements are available in a variety of forms, including bars, powders, and gels. For best results, consume high-carb supplements about an hour before working out.
Herbal boosters-
Siberian ginseng
One of the most popular non-herbal supplements in the athletic arena is creatine, a natural occurring amino acid produced by the kidneys and liver which is stored in the muscle cells as creatine phosphate or phosphocreatine.
Pyruvate, a metabolic compound that’s also found in red wine, cheese, and red apples, has more than 25 years of research to back up its claims as a fat burner that also creates lean muscle mass and increases endurance by as much as 20 percent.
L-glutamine. The most commonly occurring amino acid in muscle tissue is L-glutamine. Exercise increases our need for glutamine – especially heavy-resistance weight training — and supplements have been found to build muscle mass and help with loss of body fat. Dosage recommendations vary widely, so follow the directions on the product you purchase.

Does eating unripened fruit or vegetables give you any more nutrition/ vitamins/ etc?
Posted by admin on Mar 24, 2010
I am simply curious. I was just eating an unripened plum which tasted horrid and sour. As it ripens, the flavor obviously gets sweeter and the texture softer. Does eating a fruit or vegetable before it is ready provide any more nutrients or vitamins?
your body tells you through your taste buds that it is tastier. Listen to your body . . it’s usually a good indicator that it is better for you … and yes, more nutrients
What could cause my high LDL?
Posted by admin on Mar 24, 2010
I have always had excellent blood pressure 120/70. I recently had blood work done and my good cholesterol HDL was fine. My total cholesterol was a boarderline at ~202. But my LDL was terrible – double what the number suggested it should be under!!
What could cause this besides just genetics… or is it just genetics?
We avoid trans-fats like the plague. We rarely eat red meat, we eat a lot of fish & fruits & veggies, we use ground turkey instead of ground beef, often eat oatmeal or a nutrition bar for breakfast. I do not get much time for working out but could this really turn things around that drastically if we eat well?
Can taking suppliments like vitamin E or omega 3 fatty acids cause this? It seems far-fetched but they are oils …
LDLs are present in a variety of foods, could be from cooking oil used to prepared foods. Its really difficult to accurately tell you whats causing the elevated LDL, Try cooking foods in other methods such as Steaming so that you may determine the cause.

What are the best vitamins to buy to promote quicker hair growth?
Posted by admin on Mar 24, 2010
I am trying to grow my hair out for my wedding next October. Generally, my hair grows very slowly. It’s a little below my chin right now and I would like to have it well past my shoulders; the sooner the better!
I’ve been told prenatal vitamins do the trick, as do multivitamins, but really, does anyone know the best way to go or the most effective brand or type of vitamin to buy?
thanks!
prenatal vitamins definitely work.
they make your nails grow too.
and biotin is great for hair and nail growth, too.
there’s a bottle called "hair skin & nails" with biotin at walgreens/cvs.
try both at the same time for good results! :]
What is the most effective diet supplement out there today?
Posted by admin on Mar 24, 2010
In the past, I’ve taken Ma Huang and had really great results. It was banned by the FDA, but then made a comeback with 10 mg per pill. I am currently taking SlimFast as my diet supplement, but want a boost to go with that. I am getting married in September and I need to lose at least 20 pounds by then.
I also do not want to spend 100s of dollars on supplements.
It depends if you want to burn fat or reduce you appetite.
If you want to eat less I suggest Hoodia, the people it works for swear by it. An appetite suppressant that is all natural with no side effects is good stuff! There are many factors involved in finding the best Hoodia, I have written articles on a lot of them. Just search Yahoo or Google under my name “Andrew Aitaken” to find them. Also some of the best tips I have found are in Totalink’s Hoodia Buyers Guide at http://hoodiagordonii.totalink.com/buy_hoodia.html
If you want to burn fat and reduce your hunger there are also brands that do both. There is a good comparison at http://hoodiagordonii.totalink.com/hoodiaherb.html
Finally, you mentioned you had really great results with Ma Huang. A supplement that is growing in popularity that is simular to Ma Huang with out the bad effects to the heart is Cha de Bugre. This supplement is from Brazil and is actually beneficial to the heart. You can find more about it at http://hoodiagordonii.totalink.com/cha_de_bugre.html
